Mind

Closely connected to caring for your body is caring for your brain. Most of us want to do whatever we can to maintain a healthy, functional mind, especially as we age. In recent years, brain health has become a mainstream topic, and we now know that our daily lifestyle choices directly influence how well our brains perform over time. Diet, exercise, sleep, and staying on top of health conditions all play a role.

Here’s the spoiler: the same habits health experts are always talking about—regular movement, more vegetables and less red meat, plenty of water and less alcohol, and consistent, high‑quality sleep—are also the best ways to keep your brain in top shape.

But brain health isn’t only about what you eat or how often you exercise. Activities that challenge and delight you matter too. Learning something new, like mah‑jong or tap dancing, doing real‑world puzzles, laughing often, and spending time with friends all support cognitive vitality. In short, the healthier and more engaged your lifestyle, the sharper your mind.

The good news is that this doesn’t require a life of endless salads, hours in the gym, or forcing yourself through crossword puzzles you don’t enjoy. Brain health thrives on variety—variety in food, movement, environment, and experiences. It’s getting out into nature, reading a book purely for pleasure, learning a bit of a new language and then practicing it with others or even traveling to a place where it’s spoken. It’s trying a strange new fruit, experimenting with a recipe, or playing with paints just because it’s fun.

It also means spending less time scrolling on your phone or zoning out with app‑based games, and more time engaging your mind in ways that feel meaningful, stimulating, and alive.
